British-Kosovar co-production wins Bafta for best short

Daniel Mulloy’s short film “Home,” shot in Kosovo, won first prize for best short film in the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards.

The British-Kosovar co-production which tackles migration, won the prize for best British short film in this year’s BAFTA awards held on Sunday in London.

Directed by Daniel Mulloy, and produced by Shpat Deda, Scott O’Donnell, and Afolabi Kuti, “Home” is the first Kosovar co-production to ever win the British prize. Starring Jack O’Connell and Holliday Grainger, the film portrays the plight of thousands of refugees who struggle to make it to Europe.

Upon taking the stage at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Mulloy gave an endearing speech calling for compassion with refugees fleeing war.

“Actress and executive producer Arta Dobroshi, Shpend Qamili, and Shpat Deda are all former refugees from the genocide in Kosovo. My grandmother was a refugee from the Holocaust and I think many people here came from migrant families,” said a sombre Mulloy, who won his first Bafta in 2006 with his short film “Antonio’s Breakfast.”

“Our heart is love, our soul is compassion. We need that to be reflected within our government and our government’s policy in relation to how they deal with other countries across the Atlantic…and not put up with racism, homophobia, islamophobia, or anything like that,” said Mulloy, as the camera zoomed in on a nodding Meryl Streep.

After the win Kosovar producer Shpat Deda tweeted a photo of the trophy.

Major winners of the evening included American musical “La La Land” starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, which won awards for best actress, best picture, best director, cinematography and original music. Casey Affleck won the prize for best actor for his performance in “Manchester by the sea,” while best supporting actor prizes went to Viola Davis for “Fences” and Dev Patel for his performance in “Lion.”
