N’Katun, which means “In the village,” sits just off the main road between Prishtina and Mitrovica, where cars drive slower not because of the pace of village life but because of the dust from the construction of the new highway and the congestion it causes on the roads.
But entering N’Katun, all that is left behind. The hustle and bustle felt far away once I was seated in the spacious garden, with its bright naïve paintings and antique decorations. I could see hens pecking about on neighboring property and hear cows bellowing in the distance. Around the dining area, peppers and tomatoes are haphazardly sprouting up.

My dining partner and I were seated under a sweet wooden canopy at a freshly made wooden table. We started with speca me gjize ne tave, or peppers cooked in Albanian ricotta in a clay pot and—what else?—a village salad, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers cut up in large pieces with succulent olives and cheese.

The cooked peppers were soft and creamy with the melted kajmak, and went well with a bit of bread, even if it was reheated.
For our main course we decided to share a portion of roasted lamb. It was delightfully soft and melted in our mouths. We sopped up the juices with our bread and in the potatoes and carrots which accompanied the meal. The only disappointment was that our portion seemed to be more bone than meat.

We didn’t want to break away from the village and go back to the traffic so we stayed on for another course of coffee.
N’katun struck me as a great place to take children, because it is a big space for playing but it is enclosed, and has a playground where little ones can swing and enjoy.
The service was pleasant and informal, but not 100 percent attentive.
