On June 28, Serbs celebrate Vidovdan, or St. Vitus day, an important date in the Orthodox religious calendar as well as in Serbian national history.

St. Vitus day is both a slava (an Orthodox ritual) and the anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, when Serb forces were defeated by the Ottoman Empire.

Each year, pilgrims attend the liturgy at the Gracanica Monastery and visit the Gazimestan memorial in Fushe Kosove. The memorial, built in 1952, was erected on the battle site.

This year, hundreds of Serbs visited the historic site outside of Prishtina, carrying crosses, Serbian national flags, and signs with inscriptions ‘Kosovo is the face of Serbia’ while chanting nationalist slogans and songs.
