Hilmi Kelmendi, a Kosovo Albanian arrested on October 31 by the Serbian police under suspicion of war crimes, was released on Thursday.
Kelmendi’s brother Hysni Kelmendi received the news through a phone call from Kelmendi’s attorney.
“[His attorney] called me and congratulated me that my brother was released. I am not informed as to what the following procedures will be,” Hysni said.
Kelmendi was arrested one month after Nehat Thaci, the regional police director of south Mitrovica, was arrested by Serbian police on terrorism charges. Thaci was released on Tuesday after more than a month in detention.
According to Selman Kelmendi, another brother of Kelmendi, he was under suspicion of exercising physical force against an Ashkali family during the war.
On the day of Kelmendi’s arrest, Kosovo’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement calling on Kosovar citizens to avoid transiting through Serbia for any possible reason during the next months.
