Four city breaks to plan this October

From a ferry ride in Istanbul to an afternoon in Berlin’s museums, these four cities offer different ways to spend an autumn break.

A short October trip works best when it has room to breathe. Choose a city that suits the time you have, leave a little space between the landmarks and keep an indoor option for a rainy afternoon. Istanbul, Thessaloniki, Dubrovnik and Berlin each offer a different starting point for travellers based in Kosovo or exploring the wider region.

One useful job to finish before leaving is arranging mobile data. A hotel address, a transport connection or a message to the people you are meeting can matter more than a packed sightseeing list. Horizon lets you choose a travel eSIM online, with country and regional options to match your route.

Istanbul for a trip shaped by the water

Give Istanbul more than a checklist of landmarks. Spend time around Sultanahmet, explore the streets near Galata and make a ferry journey part of the day. Seeing the skyline from the water changes the pace of a city break. Autumn also lends itself to combining walks with time in museums and galleries, depending on the forecast.

For a visit to Turkey, compare a country eSIM with the length of your stay and how you use your phone. Mobile data is useful for checking connections and finding your way between neighbourhoods, particularly when the next stop is across the water.

German-speaking readers planning a trip to Istanbul can also explore Horizon’s plans in German on the eSIM Türkei page.

Thessaloniki for a slower weekend

Thessaloniki is a good fit for a break built around walking and food. Follow the waterfront towards the White Tower, then make time for the streets of Ano Poli above the centre. Leave an afternoon open for a long meal and a café stop instead of scheduling every hour. The waterfront gives the day a natural beginning or ending.

If your trip takes you to Greece, choose a plan for that destination or check a regional alternative. Travellers driving from Kosovo through North Macedonia should check transit coverage too. A Greek data plan does not automatically cover the journey through another country.

Dubrovnik beyond the beach holiday

An October visit to Croatia can focus on the coast’s streets and history. In Dubrovnik, walk along Stradun, find a spot near the old harbour and consider the city walls when conditions are suitable. Comfortable shoes and a flexible afternoon will serve you well. Treat swimming as a possible extra, rather than the foundation of an autumn itinerary.

If Dubrovnik is one stop on a longer drive, plan your mobile data around the whole route. The country you pass through for a few hours matters as much as the one where you have booked a hotel.

Berlin for parks and time indoors

A city break in Germany offers another way to spend October. In Berlin, pair a walk through Tiergarten with a museum visit, then leave time for a neighbourhood café. Check opening hours and bookings before setting out, and let the forecast decide which part of the day belongs outdoors. Mobile data makes it easier to adjust a route across the city without returning to the hotel to use Wi-Fi.

Choosing between a country and a regional eSIM

A country plan is a useful starting point for a trip with one destination. If you are crossing several borders, compare a Balkans eSIM against the countries on your itinerary. Open the coverage list for the specific package and check every stop, including transit countries. A regional name alone does not establish where a plan works.

For a wider itinerary, Europe eSIM plans offer another option to compare. Look at the included destinations, data allowance, validity and total price together. Pick the package that covers the journey you are actually making, rather than assuming that every European destination is included.

A little preparation before departure

Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked for use with other networks. Install on Wi-Fi before leaving and follow Horizon’s instructions for connecting at your destination. These are mobile-data plans; you can use your usual messaging and internet-calling apps. Keep data roaming on your home SIM switched off if you do not intend to use that line for data abroad.
