Pre-trial detention ordered for attack against investigative journalist

The Prishtina Basic Court ordered 30 days of pre-trial detention for Fitim Thaci, who pleaded guilty for physically assaulting Vehbi Kajtazi.

On Sunday, Judge Naile Krasniqi of the Prishtina Basic Court ordered 30 days of pre-trial detention for Fitim Thaci, suspected of attacking investigative journalist Vehbi Kajtazi on Friday.

Police opened investigations into the attack against Kajtazi, an award-winning journalist and the editor of outlet Insajderi, on Friday afternoon.

On Saturday afternoon, around 40 citizens and journalists protested the physical assault in downtown Prishtina.

Suspect Fitim Thaci surrendered to the police on Saturday night and pleaded guilty for the attack, but said that he did not previously know Vehbi Kajtazi.

Kajtazi said that the attacks are linked to politics.

Earlier this year, in August, Parim Olluri, the executive director of Insajderi, was also attacked in Prishtina after writing about the corruption of former Kosovo Liberation Army, KLA, commanders.
