Hear and see traditional Rugova music with Kallxo’s 360-degree video technology.
In the Rugova mountains, musicians have traditionally sang epochs, which during times of oppression of the Albanian language, served as oral history for the region. In fact, the verb “to sing” in Albanian serves as an idiom of the verb “to read.”
The lute is known as an instrument of the “Kreshniks” (the brave mountaineers), and songs with the lute can last for two or three hours.
In addition to playing an entertaining role, the lute has served as an important method of popular resistance for saving collective memories as well as for educating the new generations on history.
The lute is found in the same shape in other regions of the Balkans as well, such as Montenegro, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
