The Prishtina Basic Prosecution alleges that journalist Valon Syla has used physical force and derogatory language against his girlfriend. He has denied half of the allegations.
Valon Syla, a journalist from Kosovo, was remanded in custody for 48 hours on June 28 because of allegations of having beaten his girlfriend. The prosecution file seen by Prishtina Insight alleges that Syla used physical force and derogatory language against his girlfriend. He has denied half of these allegations.
The Pristina Basic Court has prohibited Syla from coming within five meters of the injured party for one month, from June 28 to July 28. The Court has said that in case of non-compliance with this measure,Syla will be placed in detention.
The prosecution claims Syla committed physical and psychological violence against the injured party with the intention of violating their dignity.
According to the prosecution’s file, Syla and the injured party had been at a family gathering where they had a verbal dispute motivated by Syla’s jealousy. The prosecution alleges the defendant cursed at, insulted, bit, and grabbed the injured party by the hair.
The Prosecution further claims that Syla bit the injured party on the back, and continuously used offensive language, after which they left the building where the family party was being held.
According to the prosecution’s file, upon arriving with Syla at the injured party’s residence, she attempted to leave the car, but the suspect forcibly took hold of her and squeezed her, preventing her from leaving. He then grabbed her by the hair. The violence continued as Syla then grabbed her hand, squeezing it tightly, and forcefully grabbed her cheek.
The prosecution claims that after the incident in the car Syla knocked forcefully at the door of the injured party’s residence several times and used offensive language directed towards her.
Syla told Prishtina Insight that half of the prosecution’s allegations are not true, explaining that the entire incident took place in the car, where he grabbed the injured party by the arm “and there I could have pulled her hair a little”.
He also denied the prosecution’s claim that there was a bite.
“I do not accept [the allegations], half of them are untrue… Now, in a moment of heightened emotion, she went and said ‘a bite’ and so on, but I denied it,” Syla told Prishtina Insight.
In a Facebook reaction, Syla has claimed he was judged in the court of public opinion before the legal trial even began and that he was “lynched like a monster”. He blamed politicians of the leading Vetevendosje political party and the acting Justice Minister Albulena Haxhiu.
Syla apologized to his girlfriend, her mother, and his own mother while claiming the incident, “was more of an argument or a tussle with hands raised [in a threat], but no boxing, kicking, or beating.”
