Kosovo’s caretaker Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, announced on Friday the lifting of the existing 10% customs tariff on goods imported from the United States of America.
On Friday, Kosovo’s caretaker government removed the 10 per cent tariffs on U.S. goods.
“From now on, all products originating from the United States will face a 0% customs tariff upon entering our country,” Kurti said in a government meeting.
“Kosovo welcomes U.S. products in its market and we strongly believe that this will have an impact on the increase of trade exchange and an increase in investments,” he added.
Kurti also said that the decision shows Kosovo’s commitment “to have a free trade agreement with the U.S.”
This decision comes after the U.S. President Donald Trump introduced tariffs on imports from 69 countries in April, justifying the decision by claiming that previous trade practices were unfair to the economy of the United States of America. Of the countries in the region, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina will be most affected by the tariffs set by the Trump administration, with 35 per cent and 30 per cent tariffs respectively.
According to a statement from the White House, goods from any trading partner not listed in the executive order’s annex will be subject to a 10% tariff, as stipulated in an executive order issued in April.
Kosovo, along with Albania and Montenegro, was affected by that order through a reciprocal 10% tariff.
In April this year, when Trump initially imposed tariffs on other countries, Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani criticised her country’s government for not removing the tariffs on U.S. goods and urged the government to remove it.
On Friday, Osmani welcomed the government’s decision to remove tariffs on U.S. goods.
“As of today, Kosovo’s decision for a ZERO tariff on all U.S. goods comes into effect. We’re proud to have been the first country to propose to remove all barriers in the way of our most strategic ally,” Osmani wrote on X.
