On the eve of a planned opposition protest, leaders announce it has been canceled.
The afternoon before a planned protest calling for snap elections, leaders of the opposition coalition announced that it would be postponed indefinitely.
The decision was made after an informal meeting of leaders of the opposition coalition, consisting of Vetevendosje, Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) and the Initiative for Kosova (NISMA).
“We know that Kosovo genuinely awaits hard and difficult days,” declared Ramush Haradinaj, AAK’s leader, who gave up his seat in the parliament in February.
“State capture has deepened and the problems caused by wrongful agreements are only weighing Kosovo down. We, fully determined to oppose these agreements, have decided to postpone the protest that was announced for tomorrow for another day.”
The protest, planned for Saturday, March 26, was announced by the three opposition parties after Hashim Thaci was elected president last month. Thaci is expected to be sworn in as president on April 7.
At the press conference on Friday, NISMA’s leader Fatmir Limaj declared that the opposition will continue to work on the cause, regardless of the fact that the protest had been postponed.
“We will continue our protest, we will continue our cause with which citizens are familiar until we realize our objectives as a unified opposition,” said Limaj.
Vetevendosje leader Visar Ymeri was present at the press conference, which took place at Skanderbeg Square, but did not make any statement.
