Kosovo watchdog NGOs sued the government in March for greenlighting the new coal plant, Kosova e Re, without the legally required environmental consultations.
The Kosova e Re plant will be built in violation of Kosovo’s Environmental Impact Assessment law, on top of other violations that have been raised before and never addressed.
As citizens breathe visibly hazardous air in Kosovo once again, institutional initiatives are not curbing the danger to public health, and the problem always leads back to lignite.
A group of international and Kosovo-based NGOs have expressed support for the World Bank’s shift towards a more ‘comprehensive approach to energy sector development’ in Kosovo.
The non-transparent Kosova e Re project is a bad investment for Kosovo’s citizens. Any serious government that may come to power should reverse this project.
