Kosovo President Hashim Thaci backed away from his calls to establish a regular army for Kosovo by amending the current Law on the Kosovo Security Force.
If the principle is established that the constitution can be breached when there is enough popular and political consensus about it, it will set a dangerous precedent for Kosovo.
The proposed army is part of a strategy to limit domestic dissent and cement the position of the elites who have allowed Kosovo to stagnate – if not degenerate – since 2008.
The worries of Hashim Thaci and his subordinates are not Kosovo's worries. Prishtina needs to coordinate with NATO, the US, and the EU regarding the establishment of Kosovo's army.
Kosovo's president is mulling ways to bypass a Serb veto on the formation of an army by proposing changes that would broaden the responsibilities of the existing Kosovo Security Force.
