Vetëvendosje activists have overturned a truck containing Serbian products intended for the Kosovar market yesterday.
According to a press release issued by the political party Vetevendosje, the action has been carried out because of textbooks designated for Albanian schoolchildren in of Preshevo, Medvegja and Bujanovac were returned to Kosovo after a six month wait at a customs terminal in Serbia.
“Today, activists of the VETEVENDOSJE! movement have overturned a truck containing products from Serbia that were intended to be sold in Kosovo. This action comes as a result of the criminal act of returning more than 103,000 Albanian textbooks committed by the Republic of Serbia, and leaving schoolchildren in Preshevë, Medvegjë and Bujanovc without an education,” the press release states, using the Albanian names for the towns.
The textbooks were returned to Kosovo on Tuesday.
The opposition party, which has been protesting the EU-brokered agreements with Serbia, said that it undertook this action because the current government is unable to take reciprocal measures with Serbia.
“Not only is the Government of Kosovo unable to establish trade reciprocity with Serbia by controlling its own borders, but it also can’t take care of Albanian children in Serbia for whom it wasn’t able to provide textbooks, even though it negotiated and continues to negotiate with the Serbian Government for years,” the press release states.
Baki Kelani, spokesman of the Kosovo Police, has confirmed the case.
“It happened at the village of Lupç in the Prishtina-Podujevo highway,” Kelani said, without providing further detail.
In 2012 Vetëvendosje overturned several trucks in order to prevent Serbian goods entering Kosovo.
At that time, Vetëvendosje had organized protests at the Merdare and Dheu i Bardhë border crossings, blocking trucks from entering the country.
