Wave of Murders in Kosovo Sparks Public Outrage and Government Reactions

A recent surge in violent crimes has sparked concern in Kosovo, prompting strong reactions from government officials and the public.

In a span of three days, four people were murdered in three separate incidents across Kosovo, raising concerns about security, access to firearms, and law effectiveness.

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has called on law enforcement and judicial institutions to thoroughly investigate the motives, circumstances, and psychological profiles of the perpetrators to ensure justice and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

During the meeting of the Government of Kosovo on Wednesday, Kurti condemned the murders and emphasized that the act of murder must never be normalised.

“Of course, we need a thorough professional analysis, immediate institutional action, and societal reflection to address the violence we have witnessed in recent days,” Kurti declared, calling for maximum commitment from law enforcement and judicial institutions.

The wave of violence began on March 23, when a 19-year-old was fatally shot in Vushtrri/ Vucitrn by a peer.

The next day, also in Vushtrri, a 58-year-old man reportedly killed a 42-year-old woman before taking his own life.

Then, on the evening of March 25, two masked and armed attackers fatally shot a man in Prishtina and injured another.

This series of murders in such a short period has sparked alarm, with many demanding swift and decisive action from the authorities.

The leader of the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK, Memli Krasniqi, also reacted warning that the country is facing a national emergency due to unchecked violence and easy access to firearms.

“In just three days, four lives have been lost to gun violence in Kosovo. A woman, a young man, and two others—each with dreams, with families who are now left in unimaginable grief. These are not just numbers, they are stolen lives, shattered families, and a society witnessing tragedy without decisive state action,”  Krasniqi wrote on Facebook.

He further criticised the government for failing to take decisive steps to prevent gun-related crimes.

“How many more lives must be lost before we accept that this is a national emergency? How many more families must be destroyed before we understand that the easy availability of weapons and the state’s failure to act firmly create a deadly combination?” he added.
