Automatic weapons, ammunition, hand grenades, and NATO-caliber explosives and firearms were discovered by Kosovo authorities in Zveçan during a police operation.
In a house in Zveçan, Kosovo Police uncovered an arsenal of weapons, which, according to Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, was used for the collection and distribution of weaponry to Serbian criminal groups.
In addition to security institutions, representatives of KFOR were also present during this police operation.
Among the weapons found on Tuesday in Zveçan, Kosovo Police reported the presence of Kalashnikov rifles and 5.56mm ammunition, “which are NATO-caliber weapons.”
“For two decades, northern Kosovo has been living in lawlessness, with an abnormal order where criminal organizations and criminals funded by Belgrade found shelter,” wrote Sveçla on Facebook.
According to Sveçla, smuggling and illegal entry of goods and weapons into Kosovo have created a worrisome situation for the citizens in the North.
The Deputy Director of Kosovo Police for the northern region, Veton Elshani, in a press conference about the house where the weapons were found, stated that “considering the number, quantity, and type of weapons, it appears that this place could also be a depot.”
According to him, automatic firearms, magazines, explosives, hand grenades, ammunition, and other tools were found there.
“We do not have any arrests, but we have suspects,” said Elshani, without providing many details, as the case is still under investigation by the Serious Crimes Directorate at the Police.
On May 26 of this year, tensions rose in the north of Kosovo for more than a month when newly elected mayors of Zveçan, Leposaviq, and Zubin Potok entered municipal buildings with the assistance of the police. In response to this, Serbian community citizens held protests. On May 29, clashes between protesters and KFOR members left 30 KFOR personnel injured, and journalists were also attacked.
