On Wednesday, Kosovo’s MPs elected Albulena Haxhiu as  parliament speaker in a session kickstarting the tenth parliament legislature since 2001.

Haxhiu, a former Justice Minister from the winning Vetëvendosje party, was elected with 66 votes in favor, 44 votes against, and 8 abstentions.

In the same session, MPs elected five deputy speakers in a package vote, in line with a recent Constitutional Court ruling. The proposal received 104 votes in favor, with 3 votes against, and six abstentions.

The newly elected deputy speakers are Ardian Gola from Vëtevendosje, Vlora Çitaku from the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Kujtim Shala from theDemocratic League of Kosovo , Emilija Rexhepi representing the non-Serb minority communities, and Slavko Simic from the Srpska Lista.

In her inaugural address, Haxhiu emphasised the importance of functional institutions and public services.

“To lead the parliament means to serve the Republic. The Assembly is the home of all our citizens,” Haxhiu stated before the MPs, pledging to ensure the institution operates with dignity and in accordance with the Constitution and Laws of Kosovo.

“A functional parliament is a prerequisite for a strong state and a sustainable democracy. Today, in this chamber, we share a common duty: to serve citizens with integrity. We may have differences, but our responsibilities are shared,” she added.

According to the December 2025 election results, Vetëvendosje secured 57 seats in the 120-member Assembly, followed by the Democratic Party of Kosovo with 22 seats, the Democratic League of Kosovo with 15, and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo with 6.

Of the 120 seats in the Assembly, 20 are constitutionally guaranteed for non-majority communities. Ten of those are reserved for the Serb community, nine of which will be held by the Serb List and one by Nenad Rašić from the Party for Freedom, Justice, and Survival.

Two seats will be held by representatives of the Turkish Democratic Party of Kosovo.

A new parliamentary session for voting in a new government led by Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti is expected to start Wednesday evening. Before the session, President Vjosa Osmani will have to give Kurti a mandate to form a new government.
