On Thursday, the Prizren Basic Court approved a request by the Prosecutor’s Office to impose a 30 day pre-trial detention on B.D., suspected of murdering his 80-year-old wife. 

The Basic Prosecution Office in Prizren announced that on August 26, 2026, just after midnight, 81 year old B.D., following an argument with his wife identified by the initials L.D., “physically attacked her and repeatedly struck and slammed the victim’s head against the ground” at the suspect’s family home in Prizren.

“As a result of the injuries sustained, the victim died at the scene,” the Prosecution announced.

The victim’s body was sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

The Prosecution said that after the incident, B.D. attempted to conceal traces of the crime and subsequently informed family members about what had happened.

On Wednesday, the Kosovo Police announced that after receiving notification of the incident at around 1:30 a.m. on August 26, “emergency medical personnel and police officers responded to the scene and confirmed the death of the woman… Injuries identified on the victim’s body are suspected to have been caused by physical force, without the use of a weapon or other object.”

Acting Kosovo President, Albulena Haxhiu also reacted stating “enough with the killing and violence against women”.

“Just two days ago, another woman was killed, these cases cannot be treated as isolated incidents. The life and dignity of every woman must be protected by every possible means,” she wrote on Facebook.

Haxhiu called on the justice authorities to conduct a “full and swift investigation and ensure that the perpetrators receive the harshest punishment.” 

This is the second potential femicide in Kosovo within this week. Just before midnight on Sunday, a 26-year-old man allegedly shot dead his 25-year-old pregnant wife in Malisheva, central Kosovo. The suspect, who also sustained gunshot wounds, remains in critical condition in the University Clinical Centre of Kosovo, UCCK.

In a reaction posted to Facebook on Wednesday, The Kosovo Women’s Network, KWN, expressed “deep concern” over the suspected killings, calling on institutions to take urgent and coordinated measures to prevent violence against women, protect victims, and ensure their safety

“Within just a few days, two women were killed by their partners, in their own homes. This is alarming and shows that women’s safety in Kosovo is at serious risk,” KWN said, urging for “full, independent and swift investigations and for those responsible to be held accountable.”

The organisation said violence against women should not be treated as a private matter or as a series of “domestic disputes,” adding that “it is rooted in gender inequality and requires a strong institutional response.”

Following the killing of the 25-year-old woman, the multi-stakeholder Security and Gender Group, SGG, chaired by UN Women released a joint statement on Tuesday calling for “urgent action to prevent violence against women.”

“This horrifying incident is a stark and painful reminder that gender-based violence remains a severe threat to women’s safety and fundamental human rights. It also underscores the urgent need to strengthen prevention and early intervention, as violence rarely occurs in isolation and can escalate when warning signs are overlooked, unreported or inadequately addressed.”

The SGG further called on all competent institutions to “fulfil their responsibilities with urgency and due diligence, ensuring that reports and warning signs of gender-based violence are taken seriously, assessed promptly, and followed by appropriate protection and support measures.”

The activist collective Group for Feminist Thought and Action has called for a protest on Friday.
