Originally opened in 2002, Tirona is located in a street locally known as “Te kafet e rakise” (Rakija cafes) which is only two minutes away from the main boulevard Nene Tereza. After a short hiatus while it was being renovated, it reopened in June 2015 with a new management and with a colorful and playful design. The former terrace has been equipped with an interesting glass roof, and beautiful wooden chairs and tables have been added to the interior. The place departed from the traditional look it used to be known for, but still kept some of the pictures of old Tirana and Prishtina on the walls. There’s a noticeable change in music and the crowd the place attracts. Previously, Tirona had a distinct older crowd of patrons talking about politics in raised voices , while the music was either old school rock music or Albanian folk music. And if something very interesting was on, it was just the sound of the TV!
The new Tirona attracts much younger people and the music is mostly alternative or pop, with occasional hits here and there. Some argue that it used to be more charming, but I still love to go there especially for an after work beer or a rakija as a digestif after a late dinner. And yes, one more thing before I forget, the delicious chicken fingers and fried potato chips with cheese are still the same!
