Kosovo Condemns Attack on Postal Office in Zvecan

Kosovo strongly condemned the detonation of two hand grenades at the Kosovo Post Office in Zvecan just after midnight on April 1, calling it “an act of terrorism.”

The Kosovo Prime minister’s office on Tuesday, described the detonation of two hand grenades at the Kosovo Post Office in the northern Serb majority municipality Zvecan as an act of terrorism, calling on law enforcement and judicial authorities to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice.

“The Government of the Republic of Kosovo condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attack on the Kosovo Post Office in Zvecan, which was opened just last week,” the PM’s office statement reads.

The Kosovo Post started the process of repairing the facility and aims to reopen the Zvecan office later during the day on Tuesday, the statement said, adding that “in the meantime, citizens can still access services at the Zvecan-1 Post Office, located within the Municipal building.”

According to the Kosovo Police, “the attack occurred after midnight on Tuesday at the Kosovo Post Office in Zvecan, where two hand grenades were thrown by unknown individuals, causing material damage to the post office building”.

Ilir Peci, the Mayor of the municipality of Zvecan, expressed concern over the increasing number of such attacks in the area.

“We strongly condemn this terrorist attack and believe its aim is to intimidate the citizens. However, I urge the people of Zvecan not to panic,” he stated.

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti wrote on Facebook that “this terrorist attack is an effort to destabilise Kosovo and disrupt its integration into the legal framework.”

Ramush Haradinaj, leader of the current opposition party Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, AAK, linked the attack to Serbia’s ongoing aggressive policies.

“Repeated attacks on Kosovo’s institutions clearly demonstrate the aggressive intentions of Serbia. This recent attack is a continuation of the terrorist logic of the Serbian leadership,” Haradinaj said.

He further emphasised that Kosovo cannot be allowed to become a haven for terrorists and acts of terrorism.

“Therefore, strong cooperation and coordination with our NATO allies, led by the United States, is crucial,” he added.

The Kosovo Post Office in Zvecan, which reopened in March 2025, was previously the site of the Serbian Savings Bank, which closed in May 2024.

This incident follows a series of similar ones in late 2024. On November 27, authorities reported that the police station in Zvecan had been attacked with two hand grenades.  Additionally, on November 29, the Municipality of Zvecan’s building was targeted with what is suspected to be a hand grenade.

The closure of parallel structures and institutions in municipalities with a Serbian majority has been criticised by the United States and Quint countries as there was no coordination regarding the action taken by the Kosovo authorities.
