Blerina Diet and Restaurant is a new addition to Prishtina’s restaurant scene, tucked behind the main KEK building on Bill Clinton Boulevard. When we stopped by the restaurant over the weekend, we were told that the kitchen had closed for the day and that it would take a while for coffee to be served. Nonplussed, we ordered cold drinks and enjoyed the shady outdoor seating. Do not be discouraged by the lack of weekend service – it’s well worth stopping by Blerina Diet and Restaurant during the week for your lunch break. The menu changes daily, and provides a refreshing combination of healthy, home cooked meals.

I ordered the chicken sandwich and the tarator, and my dining companion ordered the “mashurka” dish, mashurka being the Albanian word for bean sprouts. We were about to order a bottle of sparkling water, but were advised to try the restaurant’s special tinctured water. We were served water infused with citrus, blueberries, and thyme in large glass bottle that lasted us the whole meal and was definitely a refreshing alternative to bottled water.

The sandwich I ordered was served consisted of a crunchy brown bread, a generous serving of tomatoes, and chicken that was both tender and moist. In a town like Prishtina, overflowing with sandwich options (most of them unimpressive), I can definitely say this is a sandwich worth paying 1.90 euros for. My dining companion’s mashurka dish was ideal, downhome cooking. The bean sprouts were cooked until soft along with tender chunks of beef in a rich savory stew, accompanied with slices of whole wheat bread.

The crowd wasn’t as large as I expected considering it was lunchtime, but that may be because word of mouth hasn’t spread that far yet. After our meal, we ordered two coffees – promptly served. In total, our meal cost a reasonable 9 euros, comparable to what one would pay in many other parts of the city. Blerina Diet and Restaurant is off to a promising beginning, and it will probably be one of those places that becomes packed every weekday from 12-1, once Prishtina’s lunch eating crowd catches wind of it (according to their Facebook page, they also do deliveries).
